Barbara Davenport: Teacher, Massage Therapist, Volunteer
Barbara Davenport was the AMTA-MD Chapter Meritorious Award Recipient in 2012. Here Stephanie Haddock LMT gives us a portrait of Barbara’s career as a teacher and massage therapist.
Wayne Parker gives you a snapshot of what is happening with chapter activities and alerts members to his deployment with his National Guard Unit. He also provides a link to the new regulations proposed by the regulatory board that are now open for public comment.
Affordable Care Act
At the AMTA National Convention’s Closing Session, there was a panel discussion about the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and the role of massage therapists under this Act. Claire Heath and Krista Young tell you what was discussed. Massage therapists stand to benefit from then provisions of the ACA, but Claire and Kirsta caution therapists to review the ACA carefully in order to make an informed decision about whether to opt for insurance reimbursement.
House of Delegates Roundup
Colleen Renehan gives you a report of the actions of the 2013 HOD. She also reviews the position statements passed by the HOD in recent years. She includes an article from Hands On about how position statements are developed and proposed to the HOD and what happens to these once they are passed by the Delegates.
Adventures of a HOD Alternate
This was Sally Burkholder’s first time as an alternate to the HOD and she summarizes her experience for you. She wants to encourage other chapter members to consider running for election as a HOD delegate
The Massage Coach
Cary Bayer tells you not to assume that you know what your clients or potential clients need or want when they call to make appointments.
In his column, Bill Haynes also discusses the provision in Affordable Care Act that allows for massage therapists and other complementary healthcare providers to participate fully in providing health care and receive insurance reimbursement. A Call to Action was presented at the HOD asking that AMTA to act to protect the role of massage therapy under the ACA. [Note: The delegates determined that this was not an appropriate action for the HOD and voted instead to discuss the ACA but take no formal action.]
